In April 2016, Wilmington Montessori School was named a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School.
This award recognizes schools that are leaders in reducing their environmental impact and utility costs, promoting better health and offering a comprehensive environmental education. WMS was only school in Delaware - and one of only six private schools in the United States - to receive the prestigious honor in 2016.
The Montessori curriculum encompasses many of the key principles of sustainability and conservation. Because children feel connected to the natural world in a profound way, Dr. Maria Montessori encouraged teachers to create a beautiful indoor classroom environment while also utilizing the outdoor classroom. WMS staff works together to maintain the natural gifts of the school’s 25-acre campus and impart in students the connection and respect for the natural world that Dr. Montessori originally envisioned.
