Wilmington Montessori School's Core Values

Education for Life
“The child builds his innermost self out of the deeply held impressions he receives.”
- Dr. Maria Montessori

Through an authentic, rigorous and forward-thinking Montessori curriculum, our students learn habits and skills that enable them to reach their full potential in future schooling and most importantly throughout their lives. Our graduates are confident, self-directed learners who are able to think critically, work collaboratively and act responsibly.

Joyful Environment for Children
"Education is a natural process carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words, but by experiences in the environment."
- Dr. Maria Montessori

Our teachers lovingly maintain peaceful and beautiful classroom environments that support each child’s evolving needs, interests and abilities. In our vibrant community where diversity and differences are celebrated, children develop a strong sense of belonging and interconnection.

Individualized Learning
"Education should no longer be mostly imparting of knowledge, but must take a new path, seeking the release of human potentials."
- Dr. Maria Montessori

Children are naturally full of wonder and awe about the world around them - we support our students in an environment that encourages them to ask questions, learn from mistakes and learn from each other through work in small groups. Through our individualized approach to education, each student’s path is recognized and respected.

Teachers Who Focus on Children
"These words reflect the child's inner needs: 'Help me do it alone.'”
- Dr. Maria Montessori

At the heart of our school, our Montessori teachers are role models for our children and families, demonstrating integrity, accountability and respect in all they do. Respecting each child’s unique path of development, yet aware of carefully chosen grade level benchmarks, our teachers guide their students’ educational and social development. Our skillful teachers are supported in their professional growth and are freed to focus on their students.

Parent Partnership
"The child's parents are not his makers but his guardians.”
- Dr. Maria Montessori

We value parents as partners in their children’s growth, and as partners in the life and community of our school. Through our parent education program and volunteer work requirement, parents actively participate in the success of their children and the school.

Making a Difference
"The Child who has felt a strong love for his surroundings and for all living creatures, who has discovered joy and enthusiasm in work, gives us reason to hope...hope for peace in the future."

“The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.”

- Dr. Maria Montessori

Our students learn first-hand that they can make the world a better place. Our youngest children begin this journey by caring for plants, pets and each other, and as their circle of caring expands, our oldest students undertake a service project with global reach. Students develop conflict resolution skills through our Montessori peace curriculum and focus on what unites us as human beings.
