Welcome

More than 60 years ago, Wilmington Montessori School opened its doors. We have grown since then and are now located on our 25-acre campus in North Wilmington serving students from 12 months through eighth grade. WMS has been accredited by the American Montessori Society since 1989 and holds the pillars of Montessori education at its core. Throughout this time our community and culture have remained strong, leading the way for future generations of WMS students.

As you drive onto the property, you will notice the Peace Park, created as a reminder of Dr. Montessori’s work for social justice and world peace. The peace pole at the center reminds us of our commitment to justice for all. Our diversity, equity and inclusion statement reflects the vision Dr. Montessori shared over 100 years ago:

Our differences, including those of culture, race, ethnicity, religion, age, family structure, sex and sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, socioeconomics, learning style and world view, form and inform a rich environment that is a crucial part of educating students on their path to global citizenship.

WMS students are respected for their individuality with teachers carefully nurturing their natural sense of curiosity and passion for learning. The goals of a WMS education are multi-layered. Students gain independence, respect for themselves, others and the world around them. They have opportunities to innovate, create, solve problems and collaborate with others. Teachers meet them where they are and help them learn more about themselves as learners, friends, and members of our community, all of which guide them successfully through their lives in school and beyond.

Our faculty of dedicated professionals combine Dr. Montessori’s educational philosophy with other established curricula to provide an optimal learning experience for children. Every decision they make is made with the student at the center. Through ongoing professional development teachers incorporate the following into their teaching practice: cognitive neuroscience, integration of the arts and technology, project-based learning, experiences in outdoor education and social/emotional learning.

We are fortunate to have Dr. Montessori’s foresight and belief in the transformative power of education to contribute to global peace, justice and equity. We remain resolute in our commitment to Montessori as preparation for life and look forward to partnering with you in the education of your children.
