CAN-tastic news: WMS students honored by Food Bank of DE in state-wide service project

October 31, 2013
This fall, fourth- through sixth-graders at Wilmington Montessori School led the WMS community in a STEM-related service project called DelawareCAN.

During the DelawareCAN competition, run by the Food Bank of Delaware, participating organizations hold food drives and compete with groups throughout the state to create sculptures out of the food items collected. This year, four teams from the 9-12 program created amazing designs and worked together on calculations to determine which food items and how many of each would be needed to create them. They then organized a fooddrive and collected a total of 1,853 pounds food with the help of WMS parents, staff and local businesses.

Using the food, students created four sculptures - a flower, a giant can, a child reading a book and Montessori bead cabinet. Judges from the Food Bank, including WMS alumna Caitlin Custer who serves as the Food Bank's donor outreach coordinator, evaluate the designs based on aesthetic appeal and their use of foods that are most needed throughout the state.

WMS was recognized in the youth division with the following awards:

People's Choice - 2nd place
Best in Show - 1st place
Bounty Award (most food collected) - 1st place

Through the project, students learned the value of teamwork and the importance of working together as a community: "If we had done it ourselves, we would have gotten almost nowhere," wrote 9-12 student Shannon Surbrook Bowers. "Everyone has been so helpful to us and people in need. Everyone should feel proud of what they've done. It doesn't matter how much you donated, it just matters that you did. Every box and can counts."

All of the food collected has been taken to the Food Bank of Delaware for distribution to the hungry throughout the state. Thank you to everyone who supported this project!
