A Much-Kneaded Lesson: Baking, STEM and Giving in the 9-12 Program

What do you get when you combine flour, salt, water, yeast, sugar and water? A loaf of bread - food for the hungry - and a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) lesson!

This morning, 9-12 students gathered for an interactive presentation from King Arthur Flour's Life Skills Baking Program®. Students received a lesson on bread-baking, which included discussion of the mathematic concepts involved with measuring ingredients and the science of baking. A video camera and projector allowed the class to view the mixing of ingredients on a large screen.

This weekend, the students will have the opportunity to apply their new skills at home. Each will leave school with two bags of King Arthur flour, a recipe booklet, yeast, a dough scraper, a bread donation bag and a bread baking know-how. With support from parents, each child will bake two loaves of bread.

Not only will these newly-inspired bakers enjoy a loaf of bread with their families - they will also experience the satisfaction of helping others; one loaf will be donated to The Food Bank of Delaware!
