After-School Specials

Winter/Spring 2017 Programs
All WMS students, and others enrolled in Extended Day programs at WMS, are welcome to register for After-School Special Programs! WMS children not registered for the regular after-school program are welcome to go the after-school room when regular classes are dismissed (at no charge), have a snack and play with friends until it’s time for their special program. There is no extra charge for this interim care.

Specials are listed below by the days on which they meet:

Tell Me a Story! for ages 4-6
Mondays, 3:30-4:10 p.m.
9 weeks (1/23-4/10—no class on 1/16, 2/6, 2/20 or 3/20)
Cost: $175

Veteran playwright, actor, director and teacher George Tietze offers an introduction to stagecraft through storytelling. Students will learn the basic elements of dramatic performance and use them to tell a story!

Theater Workshop for ages 6-9
Mondays, 4:20-5:05 p.m.
9 weeks (1/23-4/10—no class on 1/16, 2/6, 2/20 or 3/20)
Cost: $175

Veteran playwright, director, actor and teacher George Tietze invites students to craft an engaging story using their voices, their bodies and, of course, their minds! Students will explore the elements of narrative, storytelling and stagecraft, preparing an informal performance for the final class.
Basketball for grades 1 & 2 
Tuesdays, 3:30-4:15 p.m. 
8 weeks (1/10-2/28)                                                                              
Cost: $155 

WMS Physical Education teacher Jill Hallissey will teach students the rules and basic skills involved in the game of basketball. Through skill drills, demonstrations and game play, children will learn and practice the things that they need to know to be a valuable member of any team.

Montessori League Basketball for grades 3-6
Mondays & Wednesdays, 3:15-4:15 p.m.
8 weeks (1/9-3/1—no class on 1/16, 2/6 or 2/20)
Cost: $170

P.E. teacher Jill Hallissey leads this program in which students will practice skills and play both intramural games and games against other schools. A schedule of games will be provided when available, but note that game day schedules will always run beyond 4:15 p.m. (typically 5:15 or later).

Science Explorers: Crime Scene Capers
3:15-4:15 p.m. for grades K-4
4:20-5:20 p.m. for grades K-4
5 weeks (1/24-2/21)
Cost: $125

Be a Science Explorers crime scene investigator! Each week, we'll use forensic techniques to figure out "whodunnit." Lift fingerprints, complete analysis of unknown substances, conduct simulated blood testing and use a blacklight to reveal glowing evidence. Who'll be the one to crack the case?

3:30-4:15 p.m. for ages 4-9
4:20-5:05 p.m. for ages 5-12
9 weeks (1/17-3/14)
Cost: $175

Keren Portia has been teaching yoga to children for nearly 20 years, and she loves to share her knowledge and enthusiasm. Her classes feature an ideal balance of yoga poses, movement, breath work, meditation and fun, helping children to improve their strength, flexibility, focus, and ability to calm their minds and bodies.

A Capella Ensemble for ages 8-12
Wednesdays, 3:05-4:05 p.m.
8 weeks (3/29-5/17)
Cost: $160

The art of a cappella is singing without any instruments, instead using your voices to make the background instrumental sounds and beats. This is usually done with pop or jazz songs. We will meet once a week and learn about three songs, one of which we will arrange together as a group.

LEGO Builders for ages 6-10
Wednesdays, 4:20-5:15 p.m.
9 weeks (1/18-3/15)
Cost: $175

Use your brain, your hands, your imagination and our LEGO bricks to build a new project each week! We'll solve logic problems, make predictions, work together and work independently to turn our ideas into reality.

Art Masters for ages 4-6
Wednesdays, 3:30-4:15 p.m.
10 weeks (1/18-3/15)
Cost: $175

Veteran WMS art teacher Laurie Muhlbauer will lead this exploration of art in the styles of the Masters. We will explore works by famous artists of the past, then create 2D and 3D artwork inspired by what we learn.

Creative Movement for ages 3-6
Thursdays, 3:30-4:05 p.m.
9 weeks (1/19-3/16)
Cost: $175

Little ones can jump into fitness with dance and creative movement activities, which are designed to increase kinesthetic awareness and encourage exploration through music, singing, circle games and pantomime. A variety of props and rhythm instruments are utilized to enhance learning and inspire spontaneous play. This class provides students with an opportunity to improve balance, coordination and gross motor skills.

3:30-4:15 p.m. for ages 5-10
4:20-5:05 p.m. for ages 5-10
7 weeks (1/19-3/2) $150

MyServe Tennis brings the USTA Quick-Start Tennis program to us. This program enables children to grasp the fundamentals while having FUN! Participants will learn basic eye/hand coordination skills, foot work and the proper basic strokes.

Steel Drums for ages 8-12
Fridays, 4-4:45 p.m. 
6 weeks (1/13-1/27 and 2/10-2/24)
Cost: $180

Musician, composer and teacher Joe Ambrosino brings his talents back to WMS for another season! The steel drum program is a long-standing WMS tradition, and the music is extraordinary. Beginners are welcome.
