Last Friday, Wilmington Montessori School students, staff and parents were treated to a special experience with Delaware's premiere professional ballet company -
First State Ballet Theatre.
During the visit, the WMS community learned about the art of ballet, witnessed a dance class (including Q&A), met the dancers and were treated to performances of selected highlights from next weekend's Grand Opera House performances of "Swan Lake."
"Partnering with First State Ballet as our 2013-14 artists in residence will greatly enhance our arts program at WMS," said Liz Madden, WMS's Director of Educational Programs.
"We are so grateful to have the opportunity to have our students experience this art form. Children yearn to move and they love to learn about the behind-the-scenes effort required to create such an impressive performance. This type of experience makes ballet more accessible and inspirational at the same time."
During the performance, some children watched silently, captivated by the music and movement, while others stood up and danced. When asked to describe their morning, one response came up and again and again:
"It was awesome."
First State Ballet will return to WMS on March 21 for a second workshop and performances from the company's spring production of "Cinderella."
