Today is Wilmington Montessori School's 49th birthday, and luckily for WMS, age is a good thing!
This year, WMS has a wonderful birthday present to share with our community - WMS has raised more than $1 million over the past six months.
Last July, an anonymous donor gave our school a $1 million gift to be matched over a two-year period. Thanks to the generosity of two loyal donors, WMS has successfully matched our first year's $500,000 fundraising challenge.
Judy Scheide, who was one of WMS's first teachers with Marie Dugan, and her husband Bill have generously donated $250,000 and the Longwood Foundation has also donated $250,000. On top of that, our WMS community is well on its way to raising $100,000 for our 2012-13 Annual Fund. We are so grateful to Judy, Bill, the Longwood Foundation and each member of our community who has contributed to our fundraising efforts at any level.
The good news is that the 2012-13 Annual Fund and 2013 Auction & Gala fundraising efforts will count toward next year's matching challenge of raising an additional $500,000. We are working hard to meet - and exceed - our goal of raising $2 million for our school.
Where will the money go? The WMS Board is in the early stages of creating a strategic plan, which will soon involve our wider community. This plan will address WMS's need for salary increases, an endowment that will support financial aid, and the best educational program for our children.
So, it's indeed a very happy 49th birthday for WMS!
