After-School Specials

Fall 2016 Programs
All WMS students, and others enrolled in extended day programs at WMS, are welcome to register for After-School Special Programs! WMS children not registered for the regular after-school program are welcome to go the after-school room when regular classes are dismissed (at no charge), have a snack and play with friends until it’s time for their special program.There is no extra charge for this interim care.

Specials are listed below by the days on which they meet:

Montessori League Soccer for grades 3-6
Mondays & Wednesdays, 3:15-4:15 p.m.         
6 weeks (September 19 - October 26 — no class on October 12)         Cost: $170    
Players will participate in daily practices and travel to play games against other schools. Practices will be led by P.E. teacher Jill Hallissey. On game days, students may be asked to stay until 5 p.m. (or later). Please note: Game day participation will be based on the students’ skill level, commitment to the team and the number of players needed to field a team. 


Stitchworks for ages 8-12
Mondays, 4:20-5:15 p.m. 7 weeks (September 19- November 21—no class October 3 & 31 or November 7) Cost: $140
Before the stars of Project Runway got to television, they learned how to turn their ideas into reality step by step. Participants in this class will learn how to plan a project, choose a fabric and to use a sewing machine to make it happen. We will complete at least two projects by the end of the term. Rosemary Kelly, an instructor at Delaware College of Art & Design and owner of her own interior design business, will lead the class.


Science Explorers: Wacky World of Science!
Tuesdays 3 weeks (September 27 - October 11) Cost: $75 
3:15-4:15 p.m. for grades K-4 (WMS only)
4:20-5:20 p.m. for grades K-4
Liquid, solid, gas. Matter, air and mass. 
Protons, neutrons, electrons and more. 
Mixtures, compounds, and concoctions that you pour. 
Chemical and physical changes that occur, 
in the Wacky World of Science, it’s clear and not a blur!  
 
This regional program, based in Washington, D.C., has been wowing kids and families in schools all over the mid-Atlantic for the last several years. Now they are sending their highly trained teachers and program to us each week. Their motto is, “If it’s not fun, we’re not doing it!” 

Science Explorers: Rock Docs
Tuesdays 5 weeks (October 18 - November 22—no class 11/8) Cost: $125 
3:15-4:15 p.m. for grades K-4 (WMS only)
4:20-5:20 p.m. for grades K-4
Travel back in time to discover the mysteries of the Earth! Join us for a dinosaur dig and unravel the stories that fossils tell. Enter the hidden world of the geode and build and erupt your own volcano. We’ll pan for genuine gemstones and learn where precious minerals are mined around the globe. As we examine rocks and minerals from near and far, you’ll be sure to discover what a rockin’ place our world can be!


Yoga 
Tuesdays 10 weeks (September 27 - December 13—no class November 8) Cost: $195
3:30-4:15 p.m. for ages 4-9
4:20-5:05 p.m. for ages 5-12
Breath. Stretching. Sound. Stillness. Yoga is the perfect way to unwind after the busy school day! Yoga balances mind, body and spirit and has many proven benefits including improved flexibility, posture, circulation, respiratory, digestion and immune system. Children will learn how to focus, balance, energize and calm themselves. Keren Portia has 15 years of experience as a children’s yoga instructor and Montessori educator, and she loves to share her expertise with us!


Stop-Action LEGO for ages 8-12 
Wednesdays, 4:20-5:20 p.m. 10 weeks (September 28 - December 14—no class October 12 or November 23)
Cost: $190
Make your own movie with your friends, LEGO bricks, iPhones and some simple software!  We will work together to storyboard ideas, build the sets/action, photograph and use the software to turn our photos into stop-action films. No equipment or previous experience required.


Art Masters for ages 4-6 
Wednesdays, 3:30-4:15 p.m.
10 weeks (September 28 - December 14—no class October 12 or November 23) Cost: $190
Veteran WMS art teacher Laurie Muhlbauer will lead this exploration of art in the styles of the Masters. We explore works by famous artists of the past, then create 2D and 3D works inspired by what we learn.


Hip Hop for ages 6-9
Thursdays, 4:15-5 p.m.
10 weeks (September 22 - December 8—no class on October 13 or November 24) Cost: $190
This high energy class is an introduction to dance designed to build rhythm, balance, coordination. Students will learn how to execute jumps, turns, funky footwork & basic elements of break-dance which include popping, locking, and finger tutting. Impress your friends with cool moves such as the Michael Jackson moonwalk, the coffee-grinder and 8-count arm waves. Movements are age appropriate and music conveys a positive message. No prior dance experience needed. 


Soccer Shots
Fridays 7 weeks (September 23 - November 18—no class on October 7 & 28) Cost: $140
3:15-3:45 p.m. for grades 1 & 2
This rain-or-shine course is designed for early elementary students who want to build skills for future play in the Montessori League!  Students will practice specific skills, learn rules and play practice games. 

3:50-4:20 p.m. for ages 4-6
Each 30-minute session is designed to creatively introduce your child to the sport of soccer. Sessions incorporate basic soccer skills, exclusive Soccer Shots games, Word of the Day, use of imagination, fun fitness activities and exercises, development of coordination, balance and agility, and team-building. This is a rain-or-shine course; we’ll meet in the gym if it rains or is too cold outdoors.


Steel Drums
for ages 8-12 
Fridays, 4-4:45 p.m. 6 weeks (September 23 & 30, October 14 & 21, November 4 &11) Cost: $180
Musician, composer and teacher Joe Ambrosino brings his talents back to WMS for another season! The steel drum program is a long-standing WMS tradition, and the music is extraordinary. Beginners are welcome.
