Video Game Design Ages 9-13 9:00-3:30 (full day) $300
Join technology teacher Michael Johnson for a journey into the world of video game design. Use digital media and the programs Scratch and GameMaker 7 to create and enhance your games. Each camper will be able to write two or three simple games based on fundamental elements: a paddle game, a drag-and-drop, and a level-jumper. We’ll be integrating physical activity through the day, too – no couch potatoes here!
Tee Ball Ages 5-7 9:00-12:00 (AM half day) $215
Get your young ball player off to a great start with a week of half-day Tee-Ball camp. WMS teacher Lisa Mann teams with Gerry McVey, veteran sports camp and program leader, to work on basic skills, rules of the game, teamwork, and lots of fun!
Between the Branches Ages 5-7 1:00-4:00 (PM half day) $210
What’s the best thing about summer? Going outside! WMS teacher Stacy Karpinski will take us into the woods to learn about nature firsthand. We’ll make tree bark rubbings, collect flowers, leaves and other items to create a nature display box, make a sock garden, create stone bugs, and more. We will end the week by planting a tree at WMS.
WEEK 3: JULY 6 - 9
Olympic Camp Ages 7-10 4-day week 9:00-3:30 (full day) $260
Can’t decide which event to pursue to win your gold medal? The noodle javelin, the bag-of-balls hammer throw, and the scooter toboggan are only a few of the events in which campers will participate when WMS Physical Education teacher Lisa Mann and experienced coach Gerry McVey team up to bring us a week of Olympic-style fun and games! Campers will try the long jump, the triple jump, badminton and hurdles while learning Olympic history, fun facts, and stories about the real Olympic games.
WEEK 4: JULY 12 - 16
Through the Eyes of an American Girl Ages 7-10 9:00-12:00 (AM half day) $235
Join veteran WMS teacher Arlene Wason and Devon Elementary School Teacher Denise Griffith for this exciting and hands-on exploration of history and today through the American Girl dolls and their stories. Each day will bring a look at a new doll and her story. Campers will discuss and explore issues from the past and present. Working with two experienced teachers, each day includes crafts, activities, a snack and lots of fun! This will be a unique opportunity for learning with our American Girl friends! Dolls are welcomed but not required at this camp.
Drama Workshop Ages 5-7 1:00-4:00 (PM half day) $220
In this camp, actor, playwright and educator George Tietze helps youngsters to turn their imaginations into dramatic art! Participants will learn rudiments of stage craft, practice yoga and other techniques for physical flexibility and strength, and participate in theater games designed to develop imagination, mental sharpness, public speaking ability and physical awareness. The camp will culminate in a performance for family, friends and the camp community.
Yoga Adventure Ages 4-6 9:00-12:00 $205
Rachel Domenick, registered yoga teacher, will lead a fun and creative introduction to yoga. We will be playing games that increase focus and body awareness, such as Ring Around the Yogi and Walk Stop Jump Clap. Each day we will do an art project and take a yoga adventure! We’ll use our imaginations, and lots of energy, to travel to the beach, the jungle, the rainforest and more. Traditional yoga poses are given fun, kid-friendly names,and children’s yoga music helps to grab everyone’s attention. We will even use our yoga poses to read some of our favorite books like The Hungry Catepillar!
WEEK 5: JULY 19 - 23
Robotics: The Mouse Ages 7-11 9:00-12:00 (AM half day) $225
Brought to us by Sciensational Workshops, this workshop in beginning robotics is a first for Camp Montessori! The Mouse is sleek, smart, and simply amazing. It has two motors, a three speed gearbox, and WOW can it go fast! It can feel its way along walls and around corners. We will show you how you can take your amazing Mouse home and make a maze for it to go through. This Mouse is so smart, and it’s all yours to make and keep. Learn about gears, sensors, electronic components, circuit boards and much more. You will also get to design and build other robots. Have fun with robotic technology, the wave of the future.
Roller Coaster Adventure Ages 8-12 1:00-4:00 (PM half day) $225
Learn simple engineering ideas, but come here for action and fun. Build a working Roller Coaster, as part of a group, and watch as our coaster cars go up and down steep inclines and through thrilling loops. Our Roller Coaster will be 3 ft. long and 3 ft. high. See if you can change things to make the ride more exciting. Students will learn firsthand the mechanics of a Roller Coaster. Design and help build other amusement park rides, such as a Ferris Wheel, Octopus Whirl, or other types of rides. We’ll have our own great adventure working… learning…and having fun! Art Escapades Ages 4-6 9:00-12:00 (AM half day) $205
In this summer art camp we will be discovering how to create a cardboard T-Rex and hatching paper-mache dinosaur eggs with WMS teacher Susie Barton. For the creative child we will be diving into the techniques of origami; for the theatrical child we will be producing puppets and masks. For the food loving child we will be making sweet jewelry and Cup O' Fish.
Sew Your Own Clothes Ages 8-13 9:00-12:00 (AM half day) $220
Project Runway, here we come! Our own multi-talented Lynda Gillow invites campers to learn the ins and outs of sewing clothing—choosing and working with different kinds of fabric, following a pattern, and operating a sewing machine. Campers will bring two pieces of fabric and notions to class (supply list will be provided), and will sew a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. Make your fashion statement this summer!
WEEK 6: JULY 26 - 30
Video Production Ages 9-13 9:00-3:30 (full day) $325
More and more of the storytelling in the 21st century is done through video. It’s everywhere…even on our telephones! Anyone can take amateur footage, but if you would like to know how to make it into a real film, this camp is for you! Learn from professional video producer Jesse Sheppard how to focus your ideas, handle the camera effectively, edit the film, and put it all together into a unified piece. Each participant will leave camp with a DVD of his or her film.
Recycle Carnival Ages 5-8 9:00-12:00 (AM half day) $210
What can you make with cardboard boxes, carry-out trays, and soda bottles? Carnival games! WMS teacher Stacy Karpinski will help campers to use their creativity and teamwork to recycle everyday materials to make carnival games such a race tracks, ball toss, lollipop pick and bowling. Friday will be carnival day, with prizes for everyone!
Cooking Ages 8-13 1:00-4:00 (PM half day) $220
Hungry? Join WMS teacher Sarah Green and become an iron chef. We’ll learn about the different methods of cooking and about proper knife use. We’ll prepare cold salads, soups, and dishes using summer vegetables like sautéed squash. We’ll make our own pizza—dough and all—baked goods, and even ice cream!
WEEK 7: AUGUST 2 - 6
Photography Ages 9-13 9:00-3:30 (full day) $300
Students will learn the nuts and bolts of still photography, with an emphasis on making the most of their own cameras, using classroom objects, scenes in and around school and each other as subjects. Topics include composition, landscapes, nature photography, digital manipulation and in-camera special effects, discussions, and critiques. The class will culminate in the creation of a slideshow and mini art exhibit.
Sampling the Renaissance Ages 6-11 9:00 - 3:30 (full day) $280
Travel in time to revisit the wonders of Renaissance Europe! Together with WMS teacher and historical re-enactor Lynda Gillow, we will explore the things that made this era so fascinating: heraldry, dance, music, architecture and art, toys and games, clothing and armor, crafts, and, of course, food! We will build a Renaissance world right here in camp. Grab your cape and join us!
The Steel Drum came into being on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, made from discarded oil drums. This year in the two-week Summer Steel Drum Workshop, while we learn to play the Steel Drum we will also be exploring the possibilities of making music from found objects. Each camper will be asked to create a musical instrument out of an object or objects that they find in the world outside of camp. They will present and play these instruments on the last day of camp as part of the culminating musical performance.
WEEK 8: AUGUST 9 - 13
Art Studio Ages 8-13 9:00-3:30 (full day) $300
Join WMS’s Sarah Green for artistic endeavors like silk screening, button making, found object sculpture, 3-D design, sketching, painting and more. Campers can design and print their own t-shirts and begin a sketch book in which we record some of the most visually interesting parts of the grounds at Wilmington Montessori.
Hola Espanol! Ages 4-7 9:00-12:00 (AM half day) $220
Join us for a week of Spanish fun that will include games, art, cooking, movement & music! All classes are theme-based and students will receive materials to take home each day. While campers are playing, singing, dancing and making crafts, they are learning Spanish!
Color Splash Art Ages 5-7 1:00-4:00 (PM half day) $210
Join WMS teacher Susie Barton for an exploration of a variety of media, and let your creative energy flow! We’ll be drawing, painting, tie-dyeing, and building with paper mache and recycled objects. We’ll even create art with food—so don’t miss this tasty week of hands-on fun!
