Kindergarten and Elementary Ages
	The elementary program consists of classes from kindergarten through sixth grade. Our curriculum supports all children, nurturing their gifts and supporting their challenges. In this way, the curriculum challenges the most able student and supports children with individual needs. The Kindergarten and Elementary programs build upon a child's preschool experience as the basis for academic learning. State guidelines requiring children entering kindergarten to be 5 years old by August 31st are observed for our kindergarten classes.  While Montessori materials and techniques continue to be important at the elementary level, they are closely integrated with current progressive instructional practices. The program continues to focus on the development of the whole child with an increased emphasis on academics. Mixed age groupings and the wide range in levels of materials available to the children provide a challenge for the most able student, opportunities for review as needed, and the flexibility to support a variety of learning styles. Students may work independently, in pairs, or in small groups, as the task requires. This individualized approach is designed to meet each child's academic needs while developing organization and concentration skills. Students are accountable for managing their time and learning to use their time and classroom resources wisely.

	Our Homework Policy
	Homework is an important part of the school experience for children in grades one through six. Parents should expect some homework every night for children in these grades. There will occasionally be projects that will be due over a period of time that students need to plan for and complete.

	Assessments
	Montessori classrooms focus assessment at the classroom level. Reading, Writing, and Math continuums help teachers to track children's progress in these areas. Teachers use daily observations and interactions with children supported with classroom embedded assessment tools used across the school community to inform instruction and communicate with parents about children's progress. Conferences are held twice a year and narrative progress reports are prepared in January and at the close of the year. Beginning in the third grade, students participate annually in ERB testing.
